Whether you choose to hire a graphic designer or not, you’re probably going to be dealing with design a lot. As a business owner, it’s important to know some design dos and don’ts.

Design Dos

First, when it comes to choosing a font, try sticking with a single one. This font should be constant and easy to read. You want customers to be able to read this font from any distance and on any device. While a font might look great on printed paper, it may not translate well to a smart phone screen or on business cards. Messy and unreadable fonts look unprofessional and are confusing. Any advertisements you create with a messy font will be useless if your customers can’t read your business name or information.

Be clever with your colors. Color creates visual harmony. Choosing a warm, cool, or monochromatic color scheme determines the foundational tones for your design. Warm colors are red, pink, orange, and yellow. Cool colors are green, blue, and purple. Monochromatic color schemes are made of the same color, but in different shades. For example, the Animal Planet channel’s logo is made of variations of light and dark green. While the actual color may be the same (green), the different shades of that color keep the logo from being flat and boring.

Keep it simple. Some of the best designs are also the most simple. Look at the logos of your favorite brands. Most likely, these logos include the name of the brand and possibly a small picture or symbol. Keeping the design simple makes the logo more recognizable. For example, when you see the Taco Bell logo, you probably recognize it right away without even having to read “Taco Bell”. Instant brand recognition is super important for marketing and advertising.

In design, alignment is very important. Lines, shapes, and objects should be lined up to create flush margins and baselines. Having your design elements all focused in one particular area can make the overall design look unbalanced and unappealing.

Design Don’ts

Don’t use a font you can’t read. Not being able to read your font means that customers won’t be able to remember the name of your company. This increases the chances of them going to the competition because they recognize and remember their name.

Don’t try to fit everything into a cluttered and complex design. While you may have lots of ideas you want to incorporate into your design, it’s better to leave it simple. A cluttered design is distracting and unappealing to look at. Your website, marketing materials, and business cards will all be useless is no one wants to look at your design in the first place.
