Almost all social media tips you can find warn against being too promotional or selling on social media. Constantly shoving marketing messages in your audience’s faces isn’t an effective social media strategy. No one wants to follow someone who is overly “sales-y”. However, you also shouldn’t avoid posting promotional content either. At the end of the day, you are a business and if you don’t make any money, your social media efforts will be useless.
Non-Promotional Posts
There are many reasons that someone could be following your business on social media. While you obviously want the main reason to be because they want to buy your product or service, users may additionally follow you because they like your brand’s aesthetic or point of view. You can make sure to appeal to these other reasons for following you by posting non-promotional posts. While these posts are outright saying “buy this”, they do encourage sales through brand awareness and retaining followers. It also gives you the opportunity to turn followers who like your aesthetic into customers when you only post about products occasionally.
Promotional Posts
However, posting links to your products or promoting a service that will make you money is not a bad thing! Promotional posts are only discouraged when businesses go overboard and start spamming their users. When users feel like their being spammed, they’ll unfollow you and stop being a customer. Keep the majority of your social media content non-promotional by adding quotes or themes pictures. For example, if you Tweet 10 times a day, 6 of those Tweets should be non-promotional.
