What Are Hashtags?

Have you ever looked up something on Google? Google uses keywords to find the information relevant to your search. Hashtags work similarly to keywords on social media. When you type in a hashtag on social media, all relevant content with that hashtag will appear. It’s important for your business to be part of that search result. Hashtags are a must to gain traffic online and increase your followers on social media.

Use Diverse Hashtags

Diversity is key when it comes to using great hashtags. Make sure to use ones that are relevant to your business. Using ones that are irrelevant to your business is against the rules on most social media platforms and can result in your being reported for spam, being blocked by users, or being banned from that platform.

For example, if you own a shoe store, include hashtags like #shoes #shopping #fashion.

Another great way to use hashtags is to hop on trending ones. For example, #womencrushwednesday is popular for posting pictures of female fans on Wednesdays and #caturday is popular for posting pictures on cats on Saturdays.

Don’t Overload Your Captions

When it comes to including hashtags in the captions of your content, make sure not to overload them. Using 2-3 in your caption is enough to keep you connected without overloading your post. If you do feel like you need to add more, add them as the first comment underneath your content to have them included without overloading your caption.

Creating Hashtags

Creating your very own hashtag is a great way to promote your business’s branding. You can use this hashtag every time you make a post to promote brand awareness and company growth. Offer to feature pictures of customers and followers that use your hashtag on their posts as well. Having customers and followers posting with your hashtag is a great way to capitalize on free online advertising.
