Watching Your Competitors

Is one of your competitors killing it on social media? Are they getting dozens of retweets on Twitter and likes on Instagram, while you just have a few? When you start seeing a huge gap between your performance and the performance of your competitors, you need to start analyzing what they’re doing that you aren’t.

When you look at your competitors, first make sure that they’re your actual competition. Do you have a similar target audience, product, and following? Just because you want the profits of a company like Amazon doesn’t mean that it’s realistic for you to compare yourself to them. If you have 2,000 followers online and you’re comparing yourself to a business with 200,000 followers online, you definitely won’t be happy with your online presence.

Look At Their Content

Once you’ve figured out who your competitors are, look at the content that they’re posting. It’s important to also look at how often the post and at what time of day. For instance, if you notice that your competitors are posting a lot of images on Facebook, then you should start creating more images of your own. Often, social media is based off trends, so if videos are trending, make more videos. Similarly, if summer shoes are trending, post about your summer shoe selection.

You should also try posting at similar times a day or more frequently, based on their activity. Still, you shouldn’t forget about your own audience is online. This information can be found on the Insights page of Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. If you want to post at similar times to your competition, ease into it by posting once at a great time for your own audience, and once around the time that the competition posts.

Stay Unique

Watching the competition is important. However, it’s not an excuse to simply mimic their content. Your customers follow your business because the like you. They want you to be unique. You can be unique by adopting ideas from the competition, but putting your own twist on it.
