Overall, product photography is an acquired skill. It takes practice to create great images, but there are a few simple things you can do to vastly improve your product photography right now.
Rule Of Thirds
The rule of thirds is very important in product photography. When using the rule of thirds, imagine lines diving the photograph into three horizontal and three vertical sections like this:
Generally, you should be lining up the subject of the picture with one of the dividing lines. While it’s common for products on plain white backgrounds to be in the center of the image, using the rule of thirds will make the image more interesting. When shooting editorial-style images, you should always be using the rule of thirds.
Using a tripod is crucial for great product photography. Using a tripod will allow to steady video and pictures. Even if you have very steady hands, you can never be as still as a tripod.
Lighting is key for great product photography. Natural lightning is a favorite for photography, but you can use studio lighting as well. Make sure to avoid using flash since it results in harsh shadows and shine. Adjust your ISO and shutter speed to make sure that you’re getting the right kind of lighting for you product.
